MEDSOK Meetings

We ´usually´ meet on the last Sunday of the month at 1:30 PM at the Heine Bros coffee shop at 3010 Bardstown Rd in Louisville KY.

Exceptions:

We always have a one-hour business meeting. Several times a year we follow it with an educational event at 2:30 PM. All members are welcome to participate and vote in the business meetings.

FEB Sunday, Feb 10th: Diana Dinicola Short business meeting at 1:30, followed by "Flamenco Fire, Gypsy Heart " seminar featuring dance artist Diana Dinicola . Learn to make coin jewelry    1:30 PM: Meet at Louisville School of Massage for business meeting and vote on new officers.
   2:30 PM:Perry Williams of Cat´s Paw will teach us to make our own earrings or a bracelet or anklet! Bring $5 to pay for materials. Bring a needle-nosed pliers if you have one; Perry has some to lend.

   1:30 PM: Meet at Louisville School of Massage for business meeting.
   2:30 PM:Stage makeup session by an MAC make-up artist Pamela McCain of Macy's Oxmoor MAC. She will discuss stage make up for 2 types of venues (restaurants and ceiling spotlights in a smaller venue). All are welcome, both members and non-members.
Sunday, Mar 26: Mystery of the NileMeet at River Bend Winery at Market and 10th Street. Plan November workshop, eat cheese, drink wine. Off to Imax to see "Mystery of the Nile."
APRIL Sunday, April 20th: Business meeting. Sunday, April 22th:la meri    1:30 PM: Meet at School of Massage for business meeting.
   2:30 PM: Show N Tell: Total Education in Ethnic Dance by La Meri. Several of our teachers will review and demonstrate several dance genres, including Spanish, Tribal and Indian, with emphasis on the importance of the appropriate posture for the particular dance.
Sunday, April 23rd: Meet at School of Massage for business meeting, preceded by learning an Armenian song and followed by program on flattering clothing for different body types presented by Patti Perryman.
MAY Sunday, May 18th:

Circle veil seminar!    1:30 PM: Meet at School of Massage for business meeting.
   2:30 PM: How to Make a Circle Veil with Helena Zahara of Indianapolis. Helena Zahara will reprise her one-hour 'Learn to Make a Circle Veil' seminar from the 2007 ISAMEDT Costume workshop at our MEDSOK meeting this Sunday.
Sunday, May 21st: George WakimMeet at Caffe Classico for business meeting, followed by two-hour rhythm workshop with drummist and oudist George Wakim.

Sunday, July 16th: picnic fixings 12 Noon: The MEDSOK Annual picnic! in Cox Park in Louisville! MEDSOK buys the chicken! We will be joined by members of the Mystic Rhythm all-female drum band!
AUG   Sunday, August 26th: business meeting. Sunday, August 27th, 1:30 PM: Gypsy musiciansBusiness meeting at Louisville School of Massage, followed by a Lecture on the modern gypsies of Eastern Europe by Crystal Settles, MSSW.
SEPT   Sunday, Sept 30th: Indian JewelryBusiness meeting at 1:30, followed by Indian jewelry and Indian dance seminar, "An afternoon of Indian Dance and Adornment" featuring jewelry artist Surekha Kulkarni and dance artists Neha and Ruhi. This event will be held at Ruric-Amari´s belly dance studio in Distillery Commons. Sunday,September 24th: A souk1:30 PM: Business meeting at Louisville School of Massage, followed by a fundraiser and member recruitment bazaar, "An Afternoon at the Souk."
OCT   Sunday, October 28th: Business meeting. Sunday,October 29th, 1:30 PM: Business meeting at Louisville School of Massage at 7410 New LaGrange Rd, followed by a program on using henna as a temporary tattoo.
NOV Saturday, Nov 1 and Sunday, Nov 2:
Turbo Tabla in Louisville Annual MEDSOK workshop and concert with Karim Nagi, AKA Turbo Tabla.
Saturday, Nov 10: Habiba in Louisville MEDSOK annual workshop and concert, with HABIBA
  • - Saturday workshop, Ghawazee dancing: AKA Egyptian gypsy dance, or, as Habiba puts it, tribal belly dance, Egyptian style!
  • - Saturday concert: local and regional dancers and troupes, with Habiba in the spotlight!
  • - Sunday workshop: Andalusian Dance: NOT flamenco, but an elegant dance form developed in 9th century Andalusian Spain to entertain the nobility. The dance emphasizes the elegant arm and hand movements of the court dancer and is performed with a graceful, floating elegance with just a hint of what would become flamenco hundreds of years later.
Friday, November 17th: Artemis birthday celebration. Take her out for fried chicken!

Saturday, November 18th: Artemis dances Turkish orientale and Gypsy Rom Workshop and concert with Artemis at the Riverbend Winery, 120 South 10th Street between Main and Market. This workshop will introduce you to the dance that could "melt a stone." We will learn steps, hip articulation, turns and gestures in the Turkish Oriental and Turkish Romany (Gypsy) styles. We will compare and contrast the Romany from the Oriental and the Turkish Oriental from Egyptian Oriental dance.

Sunday, November 19th: Private lessons with Artemis, $50/hr. Must be scheduled and prepaid.
DEC   Sunday, December 2nd: Merry Xmas!Christmas party at the Meridian Cafe!

Sunday, December 9th: Business meeting at Tami Stoecker´s home.
