Karim Nagi in Louisville

Mid-Eastern Dance Society of Kentuckiana presents:

KARIM (Turbo Tabla) NAGI
Tradition Re-Imagined

November 1 & 2 (Saturday and Sunday) 2008

Boston and Cairo-based musician and dance artist Karim (Turbo Tabla) Nagi is MEDSOK's 2008 workshop teacher and featured dancer at our Concert. Karim's reputation as a master percussionist, dancer, teacher, and (as one YouTube fan calls him ) 'party in a box' is growing fast. His high-energy synthesis of tradition, future tradition and talent engages, amazes and enlightens. Join us for a very good time!

Karim says: 'My teaching and performance transcend the distinctions. I regularly teach the Traditional and Cabaret schools, and I am also consistently invited to the major Tribal festivals. I am a native Egyptian, but am well acclimated to the American teaching style (highly verbal, and systematic with clear breakdowns, and I supply notes). I also teach at the university level. As a performer I have created pure tradition, as well as hybrid/fusion work. I think I am quite compatible with the broad range of dance styles in your community. But don't let all the credential-stuff color your opinion: my classes are fun and funny. '

Our weekend with Karim is designed to appeal to women & men, dancers & musicians. And our new venue, the beautiful Clifton Center in the heart of the lively restaurant scene on Frankfort Ave, includes a theatre with a large stage, balcony, sound, lights and dressing rooms. It will be a wonderful weekend. Read on!

SATURDAY, NOV 1: Five hours of instruction. $60 members, $80 all others.
9:00 am: Doors open for vending and registration. Vending by Donna Carleton and Nashwa.
10:00 am -12:30 pm: TAHTEEB & ASSAYA (for men and women). Have more fun on stage! Dancing with sticks and canes is a quintessential expression in Egyptian village dance. Karim teaches a bold yet graceful unisex cane style that incorporates the male Tahteeb bravado & mock combat AND the Assaya flirtation and spunk. Karim teaches with the straight cane (he recommends that students learn with long dowels) and covers all the basic spins, flips and strikes, utilizing both hands for the entire lesson. Double cane is also taught, culminating in a short "friendly battle" choreography. Karim recommends students use 42-inch-long dowels at the Saturday AM workshop. A pair is provided free to students who have pre-registered by Oct 18. After Oct 18, a pair may be ordered for $7 (see form below) or purchased at the door.
2:00 - 4:30 pm: MUSICALITY FOR DANCERS (and musicians who play for dancers). This is a movement class that will help the dancer become the physical personification of Arabic music. Karim will demystify Arabic music by identifying and explaining several recurring themes, guiding students through several songs, and leading students in dancing to each theme. The class covers Taksim, Melodic themes, Vocal vs. instrumental songs, Rhythms & rhythm changes, Melodic modulation, Song structure, Orchestration & Instrumentation. Musicians will not need instruments for this class. They can consider it a lecture, so that they can learn what will make a dancer react, and how.
7:00 pm: Doors open for dance concert.
8:00 -10:00pmDANCE CONCERT by MEDSOK members and featuring Karim ('abdallah skywalker') Nagi, who will be treating us to two of his vibrant and energetic solo performances. $5 members, $10 all others.
SUNDAY, NOV 2: Three hours of instruction. $35 members, $40 all others.
9:00 am: Doors open for registration. There will be NO VENDING on Sunday. Some inexpensive zills will be available for purchase.
10:00 am -1:00 pmSAGAT & ZILLS (Dancers and percussionists of all levels) Karim promises to transform dancers into musicians with his distinctive and effective zill method utilizing drum techniques and an ambidextrous approach. The class includes dance combinations, solo patterns, musicality, and when-and-when-not to play within an Arabic song.Dance luminary Laurel Victoria Gray incorporated Karim's approach into her own curriculum, and Artemis repeatedly invites him back to teach at her Folk Tours Camp. This class will enlighten amateurs and inspire professionals.

Looking to stay overnight? Some dancers use PriceLine.com to find good deals on hotels.
Our venue is a mile from downtown Louisville and easily accessible from all the major interstates (I-64, I-65, I-71).
  • Hotels close to the airport tend to offer fewer discounts.
  • Downtown Louisville has a wide range of prices and quality.
  • Hotels on the Indiana side of the river in Jeffersonville and Clarksville with easy access via the various interstates that converge on downtown (I-65, I-64, I-71) can be cheaper but suitable if all you want is a place to sleep and a cup of coffee in the AM. Getting across the river during a weekend is usually a matter of minutes and there is no toll.

Another alternative for the RV owners among you is the Louisville Metro KOA which is located in Clarksville IN, ten minutes from downtown Louisville and with easy access from I-65. You don't have to be a KOA member to use it and they are open year-round.
